Chapter Twelve

Rick was telling me something about his upcoming schedule change and I didn’t hear a damn word of it because Mia just stepped out of class. Ever since she let me care for her during her migraine and subsequent cramping days, things had been different. It didn’t feel like she was holding her tongue as much. We hadn’t revisited what she’d said about her parents or the dance studio, but I could wait for those big things. For now, I was just grateful she’d told me more specifics about her ankle injury. And that she was finally wearing a shirt around the gym again.

“Sorry, Rick, I’ve gotta talk with Mia.” He gave me an odd look but didn’t say anything. I was getting to the point where I didn’t give a shit what anyone at the gym thought about Mia and me. In fact, there were a few men in particular that I wanted to know Mia was mine solely based on the way their eyes followed her through the gym.

“Is that a hickey, young lady?” Judy teased and Mia’s hand immediately went up to cover the mark I’d left last night. I’d watched her cover it up this morning, holding in a complaint, but I was glad to see the makeup didn’t hold through her class. “I bet it’s a younger man, huh? They’re insatiable, aren’t they?”

The comment pulled at a nagging thread. If she thought that was the mark of a man younger than Mia, what would she think knowing it was me? Anxiety clawed at my insides, battling the desire to mark my territory. I’m not sure which was the bigger beast.

“Yup, younger guys sure are a handful,” Mia said with a laugh. The comment made my skin burn and itch. We might not have said things out loud, but she was mine and she knew it. Trying to pass off my mark as some younger man’s was unacceptable.

“Mia.” Her name came out growled, far angerer than I’d intended. Judy’s eyes widened, looking between me and Mia, who sucked in a deep breath. “I’d like to ask you about our social media. Do you have a moment to talk in my office?”

It was an excuse I’d come up with right after we spoke for the first time, the start of a scenario that played every time I sought some relief before I finally had her. And just like she did in those fantasies, Mia smiled, knowing exactly what would happen behind closed doors.

Except this wasn’t my fantasy. I was pissed at the thought of people thinking Mia was anybody’s but mine. And if this ended in sex, it’d be for me to claim her.

As soon as the door clicked behind Mia, I had her pressed up against it, smothering her gasp with a kiss. I pushed all my anger and frustration at her and she accepted, tilting and opening for me.

“What’s this about a younger man?” I growled when I was finally able to tear myself off her.
